Tattoos, Walking Works of Art

Culture

Tattoos are a kind of art done on the body with a needle to inject ink for ritual or decorative purposes. From the earliest example of tattooing around 5,300 years ago until now, tattoos have had different meanings and usages. The current status of this practice is considered as walking art and a way to express freedom and individualism. So, more and more people are attracted to this piece of fine art.

As the appreciation and acceptance of tattoos are growing, more experts believe that it should be studied along with other masterworks. As a matter of fact, modern art uses every medium to send its message to the world and body is one of these medias especially in performances where there are physical limitations.

Apart from self-expression and its artistic purposes, based on the recent studies on health impacts of tattooing, it is shown that getting a tattoo strengthens the immune system. That is, our body fights against any external impurities that go into it and then it produces antibodies throughout the whole body to protect us from infection caused by the wounds and fights off any potential threats. But remember that these findings are still developing and are not much enough to fully rely on.

Despite the reality that these days tattoos are more acceptable and popular than ever, there is still some opposing views to body art in some societies. What is the major viewpoint to the art of tattoo in your society? Do you have any on your body or do you consider it as a taboo?
