How Effective Are Masks at Slowing COVID-19?

Based on both epidemiological and lab-based research, health experts assert that face masks help prevent the spread of Corona Virus as the virus can spread through respiratory droplets floating into the air by sneezing, coughing, speaking and singing.

According to studies on public mask-wearing from 196 countries, scientists claim that countries with mandatory policies had a dramatic drop in mortality rates. That is, wearing a mask when you are exercising or walking outdoors while others are around. Also, it is paramount to wear it inside a store, restaurant, car, or any public places with door closed.

Although it is recommended to wear a two-layer mask, in a recent lab-based analysis experts report that even a single layer one can help lower the transmission of infection through respiratory particles. However, a right mask is made of at least two breathable and washable layers and is well-fitted to the nose and mouth without gaps. In addition, it is important to keep it clean after every wearing in order to have the maximum protection. you can wash your masks using hot water in your regular laundry or hand wash, but disposable masks should be thrown away when damaged.

Notably, lab technicians maintain that an uncovered cough can move up to 3 meters, while the distance can be reduced to 0.5 meters by wearing a simple cloth one. Lisa Maragakis, an infection expert at John Hopkins Medicine Center states that as “it’s initially hard to tell the difference between COVID-19 and the flu without a test [people] can spread the Corona virus to others before they realize they have it” which is an important fact to put it on.

Finally, as we all know, masks alone are not a sufficient tool to protect us against COVID-19. Other preventive measures as maintaining physical distancing, washing hands, and using sanitizers that contain at least 60% alcohol keep us stay safe in our community.

Is wearing a face mask mandatory in your area? And do you respect the policy? Comment it please.
